5 Books for Back to School

There’s no better way to start school than with a great book. Here are five fun ways to get the year started!

  1. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems – This one’s a classic. It’s familiar and comforting for little ones AND you get to talk about what happens when the Pigeon throws a fit (spoiler alert, he still doesn’t get what he wants).

2. Mr. S by Monica Arnaldo – What if your new teacher was a sandwich? This book is surreal and funny in all the right ways. It also makes a great writing prompt.

3. I’m Just No Good at Rhyming and Other Nonsense for Mischievous Kids and Immature Grownups by Chris Harris – Poetry is not just for April. Sprinkle some funny poems through your first day.

4. First Grade Dropout by Audrey Veronick – Yes, you’ll have to explain what a drop out is. But once you do, you can have lots of conversation about what could be so terrible that the main character doesn’t want to come back to school. (Spoiler alert #2 – he called the teacher Mommy.) Also a great way to talk about kindness and moving on from mistakes.

5. Eat Pete by Michael Rex – This book has a great twist ending and the words EAT PETE are repeated throughout the book in huge type. Great chance to review letters and sounds. Even the kids who can’t actually read yet will join in by the end of the book.
